Global Learning -
I found out about the Global Learning Medallion thanks for Professor Moses Shumow. He encouraged us to participate in the Tuesday Round Tables. Being globally conscious and interested in becoming more aware and engaged, I attended. I signed in and saw the papers for becoming a Global Medallion student. I looked into it and signed up immediately. I was pleased to spend my Tuesday afternoons in the discussions while attending random events throughout my years at FIU. I am extremely humbled and will take everything I learned with me into the future.
Perspective -
My perspective on issues in the world has definitely changed. My curiosity for the world has grown and I catch myself reading the news a lot more. I find myself blessed to be a part of a university that strives on being globally conscious. They really do take the 'International' in Florida International University serious. This medallion program is great and one of its kind. I have surpassed the medallion class requirements due to my minor in International business communication and doubled up on my knowledge. I believe I am well-rounded due to this medallion and my minor. I got to learn the business aspect of things like the proper way of handing your business card in Asian Countries, showing up early to an interview could be disrespectful in some cultures, and long dinners is a way of showing respectful to seal a business deal in Hispanic cultures. I do believe the medallion has helped me to bring awareness in issues while my minor has shown me how to communicate effectively in the business world.
Awareness -
This program and my internship have brought nothing but awareness. I know they are problems in this world and every country has their specific problems. The medallion program did a great job by bringing awareness and concern by showing documentaries, guest speakers, Peace Corp events, and the Tuesday Round Tables. The medallion program did a great job bringing awareness to human trafficking by posting a shed in the middle of the GC lawn with silhouette cutouts of people's quotes and stories. I definitely have become more aware and will stay aware of global issues.
Engagement -
My form of engagement within this medallion program was brought through my interest in film and editing. I take what I learn within this program and take it with me to bring ideas to my internship and courses. I've created a few videos with what the I've learned in this program. I hope to one day have a huge platform and create documentaries like the many I have seen within the program and global learning courses. All though my videos about the organ trade, gentrification in Miami, or something like CHAT Miami bus tours doesn't have a lot of views, I hope one day I make it and thank this program.
